my gf’s place had an issue with their AC, stupid lizard crawled onto the circuit board and fried it….twice. pain in the ass.

Poor thing.  And also poor gf, not having any AC until it was fixed.  Was this during the heat wave that just happened?

Found out that a big part of the reason the AC wasn’t working very well during the heat wave (other than, y’know, ridiculous amounts of damn heat) was that a circuit board had shorted out and caused the fan to operate at very reduced power/efficiency.  So the AC’s off until we can get that fixed (hopefully only a day or two).  At least we can open the windows, since it’s quite comfortable out, at least compared to the past week when it was 20°F hotter than it is now for a whole week.  It’s still a few degrees warmer than I’m comfortable with on the upper floor of the house, but it’s a little better than it was.  Plus, I’ve temporarily moved my small TV and PS3 down to the basement, where I’ve been sleeping.  Things are looking up.

I was worried that the heat in the upstairs parts of the house was affecting the cat in some way.  She’s just been very… floored.  But she knows it’s nice and cool downstairs.  She’s even been down here a few times, but she just goes right back upstairs again.

I’m starting to think it’s more like she’s going:  “Holy crap, you guys.  Have you tried this floor thing?  It’s so warm.  Seriously.  I do not understand why you are not all getting down on this.  There is enough room for all of us.  You guys.”

Bitch please. When California has a heatwave, it’s 113F.

Are you talking about most of CA where the air is actually dry, and your sweat actually evaporates and cools your body like evolution designed it to do?  Because that shit often does not happen here.  For example:  This whole week.  It’s fucking humid, and my sweat reaches the surface of my skin and then just sort of sits there and soaks my clothing, and basically does nothing it’s supposed to do, evolutionarily speaking, because the air is too full of water vapor already.  So not only is my body dehydrating itself in an effort to keep cool, but that effort is not fucking working the way it’s supposed to, because the air already has too much water saturating it.  Please tell me about your swampy CA humidity wave combined with giant fucking destructive storm and several-day power/AC loss.

According to the forecast, the temperature outside right now, at half an hour after midnight, is the same as the temperature will supposedly be during the hottest part of the day on Monday.  This is bullshit.

It’s Thursday.  Supposedly, this heat wave will not end until Monday.

At this point, I would like to remind myself of those chill winter mornings when bed is so warm, and the house is so cold, and I can regulate how comfortable I am by sticking my various limbs out from under the blankets into the cool air or pulling them back in.  And after I finally get out of bed and slump to the shower, when I get out I can actually see the steam rising from my skin as it dries.

I want to hold that feeling in my head for as long as I can.  But I have to actually go out of the house and do things, and it is terrible.

Overheating will keep your awake no matter how tired you are. Do everything in your power to lower your temp. specially your head. Leaving water in basement then putting cool bottle on head helps.

Thanks for the tips.  I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with the same, and/or worse.  At least you had wilderness training/experience (which I haven’t had).

This heat wave is ridiculous.  Hot, humid summer weather is my least favorite kind of weather, anyway, but I don’t want to feel like it’s actually trying to kill me anymore.

that’s why i hate summer in texas…shit gets hot and humid. AC is the only defense if not, your screwed. just gotta keep hydrated man so u don’t faint or anything. there’s nothing outta the area like a starbucks, walmart or mall u can hang out at?!

Well, it doesn’t matter anymore, since we have power again (although it took a couple days for the house to actually cool down enough that the upstairs became livable).  The big problem was that the storm was so sudden and so unexpectedly massive and damaging.  Trees were down everywhere and half the traffic lights were dead (around, here at least; I drove out a little farther from DC, and after a certain point pretty much all the traffic lights were dead).  There were so many people without power that everything that did have power (the mall, etc) was completely swamped with people milling around or sitting on the floor, charging their devices.  At some point, there were literally no free parking spaces at the mall.  It was as bad as it gets during the Christmas shopping season.

The summer gets like that around here in the summer, too.  I hate it.  I think it’s because a lot of the area (particularly DC itself) was swampy, before they built it up.

I’m usually pretty good about staying hydrated.  I always have a water bottle with me.  But the treatment plant was down, so we had to use bottled water for everything, and I ran out faster than I was anticipating.  (I also don’t think I realized how much I was sweating out.  I am a creature of AC.)
